Rules:
Crossroads District Pinewood Derby 2011
Below are the official Crossroads District Pinewood Derby rules. These rules are to ensure that all races are as fair as possible. Any alterations or non-compliance to these rules will result in automatic disqualification of the car.
Rules
- Wheels and axles MUST be from the B.S.A. Pinewood Derby Car Kit.
- Wheels may be smoothed but CANNOT be reshaped.
- Bearings, bushings, and spacers ARE NOT ALLOWED. Do not use ANYTHING that might even be considered to be a bearing, a bushing, or a spacer.
- Car specifications are
- Weight- 5oz maximum
- Width- 2 3/4 inches maximum
- Length- 7 inches maximum
- Vertical track clearance- 3/8 inches above the flat surface
- Horizontal track clearance- 1 ¾ inches between the wheels
- Cars must maintain the proper wheelbase. Most (repeat MOST) B.S.A. Pinewood Derby Car Kits come with the axle slots sawn to achieve the proper wheelbase.
- A computer will be used to judge the winners. Since the computer judges the race, the computer's decision is final.
- ONLY DRY lubrication will be allowed. Cars lubricated with oils or grease will be disqualified.
- Loose parts (le. parts falling off during the race) will disqualify the car for that pass. Make sure ALL parts are on TIGHT.
- In ALL cases, the Pinewood Derby Officials’ decisions are FINAL.
Tips and Hints
- Through years of running Derbies, it has become very apparent that using any lubrication on the day of the race actually slows the car down. Cars seem to slow down because of a buildup of lubricant, and speed up as the excess lubricant dissipates. For best results, dry lubricants should be applied one day to one week before the race and the wheels rotated for several hours to spread the lubricant evenly. (HINT: DON'T LUBRICATE ON RACE DAY!)
- Wheel smoothing tip- Insert an axle into the wheel and put the axle and wheel into a drill or lathe. Turn on the machine, be careful and use sandpaper or a file to smooth the wheel.
- An official B.S.A. Pinewood Derby Wheelbase Gauging Tool can be purchased through the Scout Shop in Bloomington if you question whether or not your car is in compliance. HINT- Compare your car with other cars in the Pack. If they all have the same wheelbase, they are probably correct. If not, get the tool.

Pine wood Derby Rules
- Width shall not exceed 2-3/4 inches.
- Length shall not exceed 7 inches.
- Weight shall not exceed 5 ounces.
- Axles, wheels, and body shall be from the materials provided in the kit.
- Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.
- No lubricating oil may be used. Axles may be lubricated with powdered graphite.
- The car shall not ride on any kind of spring.
- The car must be free-wheeling, with no starting devices.
- Wheels can be sanded to remove surface imperfections, but the treads must be left flat.
· Who builds the car?
- A Pinewood Derby® gives a Cub Scout and an adult a project to complete as a team. They design the car together, build it, and then enter it in the race. Each boy can work with one or both parents, a guardian, grandparent, or other responsible adult.
- Heavier cars are often faster than lighter ones. You can add metal (such as a fishing weight) to your car to bring it close to the five-ounce limit. Before painting your car, drill a hole in the wood a little larger than the size of the weight and glue the weight in place. Cover with wood putty and sand the area smooth. Securing coins to bottom of car is another way to add weight
